I didn’t know I wanted to become a teacher until the day I realised that by being a teacher I could make a difference in the world around me. What I have always known is that everything I got involved in, I needed to do my best. Thus, I soon understood I really desired to be not just a simple teacher, but a good one – one of those you never forget, one of those who manage to transmit values and make their students enjoy learning.
Along these years I’ve come to know that empathizing with our students is one of the most important things to get them learn, and that can be done just by feeling yourself a learner too. That’s the reason we must always keep on learning.
On the one hand, teachers at THE CLOUD School follow a training programme during the course. We have two remarkable dates on our calendar: ACEIA Conference in Seville every year in November and FECEI Conference in Madrid every February. Apart from these enriching events, we often attend webinars and talks, read inspiring articles and essays on teaching, and try to develop our teaching techniques by implementing new tools and instruments that allow us to be better and more effective teachers. It’s all about improving every aspect of ourselves throughout our lives.
On the other hand, as I said before, I personally consider that teachers need to be learners too, and feel exactly what a student perceives when they are acquiring new knowledge and undergo challenging experiences. We need to be students of anything. Because of that, I dare myself to be on the other side every time I can in order to empathize with my students as much as possible. For example, three months ago I started to do Crossfit, which is a brand new sport which combines multiple disciplines and requires lots of effort, but it’s rewarding too. For me this activity is as difficult as English is for our students. When I do Crossfit I learn new movements, postures and I train new parts of my body – I feel that I still need to learn a lot and I feel humble and small compared to people who are able to perform better than me. I can understand my students’ disappointment and pain when they fail because I’ve often failed too. This is how some English students feel sometimes and it’s good for us as teachers to be aware of that perspective as well.
OUR RECENT EXPERIENCE in ACEIA Conference 2016
Last Saturday ACEIA (the Association of Language Schools in Andalusia) celebrated its 10th Annual Conference in Seville, which is the greatest training meeting of language teachers in our region and the second of Spain, where about 700 professionals from all Europe have gathered under the motto “Creative Minds Inspire”.
Our experience there was really productive because every talk we attended meant a source of inspiration for our team. That encounter has given us the opportunity to learn new teaching strategies, games, activities, ideas and the most important, to reflect on key elements like creativity and motivation. We also have had the chance to check out some new materials and get to know other teachers and directors of schools, sharing our experiences and learning ones from each others.

LOS BUENOS PROFESORES ESTÁN SIEMPRE APRENDIENDO
No sabía que quería convertirme en profesora hasta el día en que me dí cuenta de que siendo docente podía marcar una diferencia en el mundo alrededor de mí. Lo que siempre he sabido es que en cada cosa en la que me implicaba, tenía que dar lo mejor de mí. De esta manera, pronto entendí que deseaba ser no sólo una docente cualquiera, sino una de las buenas – de esas que nunca olvidas, de las que consiguen transmitir valores y hacer que sus estudiantes disfruten aprendiendo.
A lo largo de estos años he llegado a saber que empatizar con nuestros alumnos es una de las cosas más importantes para conseguir que aprendan y eso sólo se puede hacer sintiéndote tú mismo como un alumno. Esa es la razón por la que siempre debemos continuar aprendiendo.
Por una parte, las profesoras de THE CLOUD School siguen un programa de formación durante el curso. Tenemos dos citas imprescindibles en nuestro calendario: la Conferencia ACEIA en Sevilla cada año en Noviembre y la Conferencia FECEI en Madrid cada Febrero. Aparte de estos enriquecedores eventos, a menudo asistimos a webinars y charlas, leemos inspiradores artículos y ensayos sobre enseñanza, e intentamos desarrollar nuestras técnicas pedagógicas implementando nuevas herramientas e instrumentos que nos permiten ser mejores y más efectivas profesoras. Se trata de mejorar cada aspecto de nosotras mismas a lo largo de nuestras vidas.
Por otra parte, como dije antes, personalmente considero que los profesores necesitan ser alumnos también, sentir exactamente lo que un alumno percibe cuando está adquiriendo nuevos conocimientos y se somete a experiencias desafiantes. Tenemos que ser estudiantes de cualquier cosa. Por ello, me reto a mí misma a estar en el otro lado cada vez que puedo para empatizar con mis alumnos lo máximo posible. Por ejemplo, hace tres meses empecé a hacer Crossfit, que es un deporte relativamente nuevo que combina múltiples disciplinas y requiere mucho esfuerzo, pero es satisfactorio también. Para mí esta actividad es tan difícil como lo es el inglés para nuestros alumnos. Cuando hago Crossfit aprendo nuevos movimientos, posturas y entreno nuevas partes de mi cuerpo; noto que aún tengo mucho que aprender y me siento humilde y pequeña comparada con otras personas que pueden rendir mejor que yo. Puedo entender la decepción y dolor de mis alumnos cuando fracasan, porque yo he fracasado a menudo también. Así es como algunos alumnos de inglés se encuentran a veces y es bueno para un profesor ser consciente de esa perspectiva igualmente.
NUESTRA RECIENTE EXPERIENCIA en ACEIA Conference 2016
El pasado sábado ACEIA (la Asociación de Centros de Enseñanza de Idiomas de Andalucía) celebró su décima conferencia anual en Sevilla, siendo el mayor encuentro de formación de profesores de idiomas en nuestra región y el segundo de España, y donde alrededor de 700 profesionales de toda Europa se han reunido bajo el lema «Creative Minds Inspire» (las mentes creativas inspiran).
Nuestra experiencia allí ha sido realmente productiva ya que cada charla a la que hemos asistido ha significado una fuente de inspiración para nuestro equipo. Este encuentro nos ha dado la oportunidad de aprender nuevas estrategias de enseñanza, juegos, actividades, ideas y, lo más importante, reflexionar sobre elementos clave como la inspiración y motivación. También hemos tenido la posibilidad de echar un vistazo a nuevos materiales y llegar a conocer a otros profesores y directores de escuelas, compartiendo nuestras experiencias y aprendiendo los unos de los otros.
