My entry this week is related to the celebration of Hallowen. In relation to this topic I will mention that, due to the closeness that we, teachers of English, have towards this celebration, it is a recurrent theme at this time of the year. Nevertheless, it is not a commonly shared idea among members of the educational system, parents or students. Therefore, I will stand up for Halloween as a festival and promote its teaching not only here in Spain but also in the classrooms all around the world, as it is a way to make students familiar with a festival that is celebrated in more and more countries in the world. Apart from this, Halloween brings us closer especially to the Anglo-saxon culture from a fun, educational and very motivating perspective. Nevertheless, we must never forget about our own culture and celebrations, also marked during these days, to which the student commonly goes back in order to establish comparisons and cultural conventions. Let us embrace what helps us promote culture. As Mahatma Gandhi said ‘No culture can live if it attempts to be exclusive’.
The plan
This week we will be celebrating Halloween and we will decorate a haunted house made of recycled materials. This way, we will bring our students closer to the object celebration, but, at the same time we will be working other contents transversally, such as the concept of recycling certain products.
In the first place, we will select some carton boxes that we may have previously save for the purpose. Some milk or juice boxes, together with others of different sizes are perfect for this activity, as they allow you to pile them or assembly them in a variety of ways, providing the project with a hint of creativity. These boxes will be given a coat of black acrylic paint and will be let dry up for the next step.
The next step will be to try a possible assembly in order to be able to determine where to draw the doors and windows that will light up the rooms in out horrific house. On the other hand, it will also be necessary to cut a part of the box in the section which will serve as a joint between rooms, this way we will allow the light coming from the inside to reach every corner of our house. Next, we will cut out the remaining pieces of cardboard and in the window we will add some pieces of yellow cellophane, which will act as windows panels and add a touch of colour to our house.
Lastly I will assembly the house in advance, pasting it with white glue in a way in which everything is gathered into one building with a main door and a back access for the students to be able to decorate.
The main object of this project is working with specific vocabulary related to Halloween together with the prepositions of place. The students will have to draw other decorative elements such as witches, black cats, tombstones, spider webs etc, that will be placed in different locations around the house according to the use of prepositions following the teacher’s instructions. Finally, the house will be lit up with little led lamps and the students will describe it giving special emphasis to the prepositions of place and specific vocabulary.

PROYECTO DE HALLOWEEN: UNA CASA ENCANTADA
Mi entrada esta semana está relacionada con la celebración de Halloween. En relación a este tema mencionaré que, debido a la cercanía que los profesores de inglés tenemos con esta celebración, es un tema recurrente en esta época del año. Sin embargo, no es una idea comúnmente compartida entre los miembros del sistema educativo, padres o alumnos. Por ello, por mi parte, me gustaría romper una lanza a favor de este festival y promover su enseñanza no solo aquí en España sino también en aulas de todo el mundo, puesto que es una manera de acercar al alumnado a una festividad celebrada cada vez en más países. Además de esto, Halloween nos acerca especialmente a la cultura anglosajona desde una perspectiva divertida, instructiva y muy motivadora para todo tipo de estudiantes. No obstante, cabe destacar que nunca debemos olvidar nuestra propia cultura y celebraciones, también señaladas en estas fechas, a las que el alumnado recurre en numerosas ocasiones para establecer comparaciones y convenciones de tipo cultural. En conclusión: abracemos lo que nos ayuda a promover la cultura. Como dijo Mahatma Ghandi “Ninguna cultura puede vivir si intenta ser exclusiva”.
El plan
Esta semana vamos a celebrar Halloween decorando una mansión encantada hecha de materiales reciclados. De este modo, aproximaremos a nuestros estudiantes a la festividad objeto, pero a la misma vez estaremos trabajando otros contenidos de manera transversal, como el reciclaje de ciertos productos.
En primer lugar seleccionaremos varias cajas de cartón que hayamos podido ir guardando para el proyecto. Algunas cajas de leche o de zumo, así como otras de diferentes tamaños son perfectas para tal actividad, ya que permiten ser apiladas o ensambladas de diferentes formas, aportando algo de creatividad al proyecto. Estas cajas se pintarán con pintura acrílica negra y se dejarán secar para el siguiente paso.
El siguiente paso será ensayar un posible ensamblaje para así poder determinar donde dibujar nuestra puerta y ventanales que iluminarán las estancias de nuestra terrorífica casa. Por otro lado, también será necesario recortar una parte de cada caja en el fragmento que servirá de unión para las habitaciones, de este modo permitiremos que la iluminación interior se cuele por todos los rincones de nuestra casa. A continuación, recortaremos los pedazos sobrantes de cartón y en el lugar de los ventanales añadiremos unos recortes de papel de celofán amarillo, que harán las veces de ventanas y aportarán un toque de color a nuestra casa.
En último lugar, ensamblaré la casa por adelantado, pegándola con cola de carpintero, de manera que todo quede unido en un solo edificio con una puerta de entrada y un acceso trasero para que los estudiantes lo puedan decorar.
El objetivo del proyecto es principalmente trabajar vocabulario específico de Halloween y preposiciones de lugar. Los estudiantes deberán dibujar otros elementos de decoración como brujas, gatos negros, arañas, telarañas, velas, tumbas, etc, que se colocarán en diferentes lugares atendiendo al uso de preposiciones siguiendo las indicaciones de la profesora. Finalmente, la casa se iluminará por dentro con pequeñas lámparas de led y los estudiantes la describirán poniendo énfasis en las preposiciones de lugar (in, next to, between, on, over, under, below) y al vocabulario específico (witch, black cat, spider, spider web/cobweb, ghost, tombstone, etc).
