Some weeks ago I was in class with my B1 students working on ‘clothing vocabulary’ and I wondered how I could manage to make them use specific terms and get some fluency when speaking about that topic. Having knowledge of vocabulary related to clothes is really necessary in their PET exam at the end of the course, and also in the future when they travel abroad and go shopping for clothes. Definitely, we are killing two birds with one stone – acquiring tools to pass the exam and also developing their speaking skills for real life.
This is how I came up with the idea of this ‘game of clothes’, also inspired by the series ‘Game of thrones’, which one of my students likes a lot, knowing that they would find it funny.
It just took me some hours to prepare the board, include the questions and different squares, print it out and laminate it. That’s all, easy-peasy! During our following lesson, when I suggested playing the game, they showed great enthusiasm! There’s nothing like a game to get them motivated. We only needed some dice and counters to play and practice all the words and expressions related to clothes that we had learnt the days before. The game consists basically in answering questions by turns, trying to speak for about 40 seconds, and the player who gets to the final square is the winner! It’s such a basic conversation game, but it really works!

GAME OF CLOTHES (juego de la ropa)
Hace unas semanas estaba en clase con mis alumnos de nivel B1 trabajando vocabulario sobre la ropa, y me preguntaba cómo podría apañármelas para hacerlos usar un léxico específico y que consiguieran fluidez al hablar de ese tema. Tener conocimiento de términos relacionados con la ropa es realmente necesario en su examen PET al final del curso, y también en el futuro cuando viajen al extranjero y vayan de compras. Definitivamente, estamos matando dos pájaros de un tiro: adquirir herramientas para aprobar el examen y también desarrollar sus habilidades orales para la vida real.
Así es como se me ocurrió la idea de este “game of clothes” (juego de la ropa), también inspirada por la serie “Juego de Tronos”, de la que uno de mis alumnos es seguidor, sabiendo que les haría gracia el paralelismo.
Sólo me llevó unas horas preparar el tablero, incluir las preguntas y diferentes casillas, imprimirlo y plastificarlo. ¡Eso es todo, pan comido! Durante nuestra siguiente clase, cuando sugerí jugarlo, mostraron un gran entusiasmo. No hay nada como un juego para motivarlos. Sólo necesitamos unos dados y fichas para jugar y practicar todas las palabras y expresiones relacionadas con la ropa que habíamos aprendido los días anteriores. El juego consiste básicamente en contestar preguntas por turnos, intentando hablar por lo menos 40 segundos, y el jugador que llegue antes a la casilla final es el ganador. Es un juego de conversación muy básico, pero ¡realmente funciona!
