This week our C1 level students are going to test their knowledge and abilities by taking the Advanced Cambridge Exam. That is why I would like to outline some basic tips that may be very useful not only for them, but also for all the students who will undergo such an evaluation in the near future.
- Organise well your time
You should practise doing the exam exercises at home with a stopwatch. This way you will know which parts take you more time to think and finish, but most importantly you will control the time you have to complete all the tasks. Do not worry though, there will be a clock in the examination room.
- Start with easier parts
When beginning a written part of the exam, I am referring to the Reading and Use of English Part, begin with the exercises that you are better at. This way you can finish them quickly and leave the rest of the time for the more difficult ones.
- Do not leave empty spaces
If you don’t know the answer or you aren’t sure, write what comes to your mind. There is always a chance to get the answer right.
- Pay attention
Take advantage of the texts included in the test. You can find there some useful vocabulary and solution to your doubts when spelling words.
- Be consistent
As all of you know there are some differences in British and American English. Be careful when choosing and spelling words, especially in the Writing Part. If you prefer the American way, be constant and stick to their way of spelling and using words. Apply the same rule when writing in British English. Here are some differences: organisation UK – organization US, realise UK – realize US, centre UK – center US, a bill UK – a check US, a car park UK – a parking lot US, underground UK – subway US.
- Remember about the answer sheet
This is basically the most important part of the exam. All your answers must be written there! If not, you will get no points. And remember that you must copy all the answers within the time given to fulfill each part of the test!
- Stay focused during the Speaking Part
Remember to listen carefully to the examiner as well as to other student taking the exam with you. You may be asked to comment on her/his opinion. Show as much as you know when speaking. This is the only chance for the examiners to assess your abilities, command and fluency. If you don’t feel too confident about the collaborative task, let the other student speak first. Do not forget that the examiner is also a person!!! They understand perfectly the stress and pressure you are under. Don’t be afraid to ask her/him to repeat the question.

CONSEJOS BÁSICOS ANTES DE EXAMINARSE
Esta semana nuestros estudiantes del nivel C1 van a poner a prueba sus conocimientos y habilidades haciendo el Examen Avanzado de Cambridge. Por eso me gustaría dar algunos consejos básicos que pueden ser muy útiles no sólo para ellos, sino también para todos los estudiantes que se someterán a este tipo de evaluación en un futuro próximo.
- Organiza bien tu tiempo
Deberías practicar haciendo los ejercicios del examen en casa con un cronómetro. De esta manera sabrás en qué partes tardas más en pensar y acabar, pero lo más importante es que controlarás el tiempo que tienes para completar todas las tareas. No obstante, no te preocupes, habrá un reloj en la sala de examen.
- Comienza por lo fácil
Al empezar la parte escrita del examen, me refiero a la parte de Reading and Use of English, comienza por los ejercicios que se te dan mejor. De esta manera puedes acabar con ellos antes y dejar el resto del tiempo para los más difíciles.
- No dejes espacios en blanco
Si no sabes la respuesta o no estás seguro, escribe lo que te viene a la mente. Siempre hay posibilidad de acertar.
- Presta atención
Aprovecha los textos incluidos en el examen. Allí puedes encontrar un vocabulario útil, así como resolver tus dudas de ortografía.
- Sé coherente
Como sabes hay algunas diferencias ente el inglés británico y americano. Ten cuidado al elegir y escribir palabras, especialmente en la parte de Writing. Si prefieres el modo americano, sé constante y mantén su ortografía y el uso de palabras. Aplica la misma regla si escribes en inglés británico. Algunas diferencias: organisation UK – organization US, realise UK – realize US, centre UK – center US, a bill UK – a check US, a car park UK – a parking lot US, underground UK – subway US.
- Acuérdate de la hoja de respuestas
Es básicamente la parte más importante del examen. ¡Todas tus respuestas deben estar allí! Si no es así, no ganarás puntos. ¡Y recuerda que tienes que copiar todas las respuestas dentro del tiempo dado para cumplir cada parte de examen!
- Concéntrate durante la parte oral
Recuerda que debes escuchar con atención al examinador, así como al otro estudiante que se examina contigo. Puede que tengas que opinar sobre la respuesta del otro. Muestra todo lo que sabes. Esta es la única oportunidad para que los examinadores evalúen las capacidades, dominio y fluidez de tu inglés. Si no te sientes muy seguro en la parte colaborativa, deja que el otro estudiante hable primero. ¡No olvides que el examinador es una persona!!! Entiende perfectamente el estrés y la situación en la que estás. No tengas miedo de pedirle que repita la pregunta.
