Reading is one of the skills assessed in the Cambridge examinations, which many of our students will take soon. Too often, we find learners who are not used to reading even in their mother tongue, so it’s an added difficulty. Basically, we must improve our reading by reading. Here are some tips which will help you:
- Read every day: it can be anything in English, like blogs, online magazines, newspaper articles, short stories, comics, … whatever! You’ll find lots of texts on the internet.
- Read about things that interest you: you’ll be far more motivated. For instance, if you like fishing, try to find information about fishing in English; if it’s decorating nails or make up, look for it in English. What I mean is that whatever your hobby is, try to go deeper into it by reading.
- Schedule a time to read: any time is good to read, but if you can set aside some time every day, it will help you in developing a reading habit.
- Set your mobile phone or tablet in English: that way you’ll learn new vocabulary, and when using apps like TripAdvisor, for example, you’ll be able to read reviews in English first. You can also follow webs in English on social networks like Facebook or Instagram.
- Go from less to more: start reading easy texts which are interesting for you and adapted to your level in order to review your vocabulary and learn new words progressively.
- If you find a word you don’t know, underline it or write it down, and continue reading trying to deduce its meaning from the context. Just at the end, use your dictionary to learn those words. You can also build sentences with them to assimilate them better.
- Scanning and skimming: by scanning a text you can find specific information, which can be really useful when you are looking for concrete answers. On the contrary, by skimming a text you can get the main idea without paying attention to details. They’re two reading techniques with different purposes.
- Practice! If you are preparing for an official exam, work on its format. Remember that ‘practice makes perfect’!

CONSEJOS PARA MEJORAR TU ‘READING’
El ‘reading’ o comprensión lectora es una de las destrezas evaluadas en los exámenes de Cambridge, que muchos de nuestros estudiantes hará pronto. Demasiado a menudo, encontramos alumnos que no están acostumbrados a leer ni siquiera en su lengua materna, por lo que se trata de una dificultad añadida. Básicamente debemos mejorar nuestra lectura a través de la lectura. Aquí tenéis algunos trucos o recomendaciones que os ayudarán:
- Lee todos los días: puede ser cualquier cosa en inglés, como blogs, artículos en revistas y periódicos online, historias cortas, comics, … ¡lo que sea! Encontrarás montones de textos en internet.
- Lee sobre cosas que te interesen: estará mucho más motivado/a. Por ejemplo, si te gusta pescar, busca información sobre pesca en inglés; si es decoración de uñas o maquillaje, búscalo en inglés. Lo que quiero decir es que cualquiera que sea tu hobby, intenta indagar más sobre él a través de la lectura.
- Planifica un tiempo para leer: cualquier momento es bueno, pero si consigues dedicar un tiempo cada día, te ayudará a crear un hábito de lectura.
- Configura tu móvil o tablet en inglés: de esta manera aprenderás nuevo vocabulario, y cuando uses aplicaciones como Tripadvisor, por ejemplo, podrás leer reviews en inglés lo primero. También puedes seguir páginas en inglés en redes sociales como Facebook o Instagram.
- Ve de menos a más: empieza con textos sencillos que sean interesantes para ti y adaptados a tu nivel para repasar vocabulario y aprender nuevos términos progresivamente.
- Si encuentras una palabra que no conoces, subráyala o anótala, y continúa leyendo intentando deducir su significado del contexto. Sólo al final, usa tu diccionario para aprender esas palabras. Puedes también construir frases con ellas para asimilarlas mejor.
- Scanning y skimming: ‘scanning’ o escaneado de un texto siginifica buscar información específica, que puede ser realmente útil cuando buscamos respuestas concretas. Mediante el skimming podemos extraer la idea principal del texto sin prestar atención a los detalles. Son dos técnicas de lectura con distintos fines.
- ¡Practica!: si estás preparándote para un examen oficial, trabaja el formato de dicho examen. Recuerda que la práctica hace la perfección.
