Many of our students are preparing specific examinations by Cambridge this course. That is why I am going to devote a few lines here to all of you who are making the effort to do your best in the upcoming tests.
I want to be the cream of the crop
When we decide that we want to get a certificate to credit our level of English, we do not often consider the side effects of this decision. In the first place we must always remember that the exposition to the language is essential, in fact, that is the way babies start developing their mother tongue. Therefore, two or three hours a week is a good degree of exposition, but this must be reinforced by a considerable amount of extra input, that is to say, more English, especially in intermediate and advanced levels.
A pain in the neck
Probably many of our students are tired of us drilling them in the necessity of watching TV series and films in original version, listening to music in English, and reading books and texts in English. We know and we are sorry for that, but that is the way! You must be exposed to improve. Unfortunately, not all of us have the possibility to study abroad or receive grants from the government to travel; many times it becomes a very high economic effort that families cannot afford. Therefore, we must be creative and discover new sources of exposition to English.
My phone is an extension of my hand
Many of you are very curious and spend half of your day handling your mobile phone and surfing the Internet, so, why not picking up some vocabulary and structures by using it? Here I am going to tell you about some of the websites and mobile/tablet apps that I use or have been using in order to be exposed to English. The reasons why I want to give summarises into three main ideas:
- Engagement: it is attractive and inviting to people of all ages. Once you get hooked on a game you won’t want to stop. It is very motivating.
- Convenience: everybody can do it, and if you don’t have a mobile device, you can always ask an older relative.
- Efficiency: everyone likes playing games and being challenged. That is how you learn, and, as you are so motivated, you don’t even realise you are making progress!
LIST OF APPS AND WEBSITES
Vocabulary and Grammar
- WORDREFERENCE: The best website/app-based dictionary to look up new words and expressions. Scroll down to check out the forum contents related to the word you’re looking up. You will feel comforted when you discover other users’ contributions and see that your doubts are very common.
- ENGLISH VOCABULARY PROFILE : You have to log in to enter this online dictionary, but not much data are required and it is very safe. You can access content that is exclusively tailored to your level according to the CEFR (A1 to C2). Do you struggle to find synonyms of ‘good’, ‘think’, or ‘interesting’? Try this fantastic website which is great to improve your written and spoken English, you can also hear the pronunciation and see examples of the words’ use.
- WORD BY LETTER: Although its display is not very attractive, apart from being able to find lists of words with specific prefixes or suffixes it can help you find the solution to your beloved end-of-the-unit crossword!
- MY WORD BOOK: Here you can practise English in a flashcard format. You can also create you own flashcards and record its pronunciation by giving it access to your camera and voice recorder.
- VOCABULARY BUILDER : Work in word definition and enrich your vocabulary by practicing in this app whenever you have 10 or 15 spare minutes. It will keep on repeating the mistaken words until you learn them, just like a teacher, but with an on/off button!!
- PHRASAL VERB MACHINE: Apart from having a great design, which is both visual and very intuitive, it is very good to show how a Spanish translation is not always necessary to learn English. Check out this VIDEO .
- ENGLISH IDIOMS: just as it sounds! Try to learn one every day. Use this app to practise your grammar by doing quizzes and tests. Many of them are based on common mistakes like ‘listen vs. hear’, ‘present simple or continuous’ or ‘basic weather expressions’.
GAMES AND CURIOUS STUFF
- BUZZFEED: You can find recipes, Internet cats, vines, tweets, jokes, gossips and all the trending topics in the world. Just select US/UK English in the top right hand corner section and have fun sharing content with friends.
- CHARADES: It is a fun game to enjoy in pairs or teams with friends and children. One will do mime and another person will hold the device in the forehead and guess the word, expression or character. It is great free fun!
- PINTEREST: Create your own boards with specific content of your interest. You only need to select English in language preferences and look for anything from remedies, recipes and clothing to handicrafts, geek curiosities, technology or photography. You can also follow us on our Pinterest and get specific ESL (English as a second language) filtered content.
- YOUTUBE: Search for content in English, you know you can find everything on Youtube! Moreover, you can more specifically look for ESL content and Cambridge texts to practise your listening. I would strongly recommend you to follow the channel TED or access their website, which constantly uploads very moving and powerfully motivating speeches on a vast amount of different subjects.
- SPORCLE: Surf this website and browse the most popular games to challenge friends or even random people from other different countries. You don’t have to select language, as it is an American website created (also an app for apple and android) to stimulate your brain by means of trivia quizzes and games.
- TRIVIA CRACK: Challenge your Facebook friends and other worldwide random players in general knowledge questions. You will be using English as a tool to help you answer questions and you will be picking up new vocabulary and reinforcing question structures.
- LYRICS TRAINING: This website is great for those who enjoy music and singing. Browse through the crazy amount of hits from a variety of styles and years and complete the kareoke. Sometimes you may need to go URBAN DICTIONARY to look up some slang words and expressions, isn’t it interesting?
I am sure some of these ring the bell to you, so now I hope you start using some of these resources and take advantage of them to practise and prepare for your future exams. I guarantee you will see the results!!

WEBS Y APLICACIONES PARA EXPONERTE… AL INGLÉS!
Muchos de nuestros estudiantes están preparando exámenes específicos de Cambridge este curso, por eso voy a dedicar unas líneas aquí para todos aquellos que están haciendo el esfuerzo para hacerlo lo posible en las próximas pruebas.
Quiero ser la crème de la crème
Cuando decidimos que queremos conseguir un certificado para acreditar nuestro nivel de inglés, no siempre consideramos los efectos colaterales de esta decisión. En primer lugar siempre debemos recordar que la exposición al idioma es esencial, de hecho, esa es la manera en la que los bebés empiezan a desarrollar el lenguaje. Por lo tanto, dos o tres horas a la semana es una buena cantidad de exposición, pero ésta debe ser reforzada por una cantidad considerable de input extra, es decir, más inglés, especialmente en niveles intermedio y avanzado.
Un grano en el c**o
Probablemente muchos de nuestros estudiantes están hartos de sentir como sus profesores/as les taladramos el celebro con la necesidad de ver series de TV y películas en versión original, escuchar música en inglés y leer libros y textos en inglés. Lo sabemos y lo sentimos, ¡pero ese es el camino! Debes exponerte para mejorar. Desafortunadamente no todos tenemos la posibilidad de estudiar en el extranjero o recibir subvenciones del gobierno para viajar; muchas veces se convierte en un verdadero esfuerzo económico que las familias no pueden permitirse. Por lo tanto, debemos ser creativos y descubrir nuevas fuentes de exposición al inglés.
Mi teléfono es una extensión de mi mano
Muchos de vosotros/as sois muy curiosos y pasáis la mitad del día manipulando el teléfono móvil y navegando en Internet, así que, ¿por qué no aprender estructuras y vocabulario usándolo? Aquí voy a hablaros sobre algunas de las páginas web y aplicaciones para móvil o tablet que uso o he usado alguna vez para mantenerme expuesta al inglés. Las razones que quiero dar se resumen en tres ideas principales:
- Compromiso: es atractivo y llamativo para personas de todas las edades. Una vez que te enganches a un juego, no querrás parar. Es muy motivador.
- Comodidad: todo el mundo puede hacerlo, y si no tienes un dispositivo móvil, siempre puedes pedirlo a un familiar mayor.
- Eficiencia: a todo el mundo le gusta jugar y ser desafiado. Así es como aprendes, y como estás tan motivado/a ¡no te das ni cuenta de que estás progresando!

Vocabulario y Gramática
- Wordreference: la mayor web de diccionario online para buscar nuevas palabras y expresiones. Desplázate hacia abajo en la web para comprobar el contenido del foro relacionado con la palabra que buscas. Te sentirás reconfortado/a al descubrir las contribuciones de otros usuarios y ver que tus dudas son muy comunes.
- English Vocabulary Profile: tienes que iniciar sesión para entrar en este diccionario en línea, pero se requieren pocos datos y es muy seguro. Puedes acceder a contenido exclusivo adaptado a tu nivel según el MCER (A1 a C2).
- Thesaurus.com: ¿Tienes dificultades para encontrar sinónimos de ‘bueno’, ‘pensar’ o ‘interesante’? Prueba este fantástico sitio web que está muy bien para mejorar tu inglés hablado y escrito, también se puede escuchar la pronunciación y ver ejemplos de las palabras en uso.
- Word by Letter.com: aunque su apariencia no es muy atractiva, además de ser capaz de encontrar listas de palabras con determinados prefijos o sufijos, esta web puede ayudarte a encontrar la solución a tu adorado crucigrama del final de la unidad!
- My Word Book: aquí se puede practicar inglés en formato “flashcards o tarjetas”. También puedes crear tu propio vocabulario y grabar la pronunciación dándole acceso a la grabadora de voz y a la cámara de tu dispositivo.
- Vocabulary Builder: Trabaja las definiciones y enriquece tu vocabulario practicando en esta app cuando tengas 10 o 15 minutos libres. Te repetirá las palabras en las que te equivoques hasta que las aprendas, ¡como una teacher pero con un botón de encendido/apagado!
- English Idioms: ¡Tal y como suena! Prueba a aprender uno cada día.
- Phrasal verb machine: aparte de tener un gran diseño, ya que es visual y muy intuitiva, esta app es muy buena para mostrar cómo una traducción al español no siempre es necesaria para aprender inglés. Échale un vistazo a este VIDEO.
JUEGOS Y COSAS CURIOSAS
- Buzzfeed.com: encontrarás recetas, gatos de internet, vines, tweets, chistes, chismes y todos los temas tendencia en el mundo. Selecciona inglés de U.S. o U.K. en la esquina superior derecha y a divertirte y compartir contenido con amigos.
- Charades! Es un divertido juego para disfrutar en parejas o en equipos con amigos y niños. Uno hace la mímica y otra persona sostiene el dispositivo en la frente y adivina la palabra, expresión o personaje. Es muy divertido ¡y gratis!
- Pinterest: crea tus propios tableros con contenidos específicos de tu interés. Sólo necesitas seleccionar inglés en preferencias de idioma y buscar contenido que va desde ropa, recetas y remedios a ‘fricadas’, tecnología, artesanía y fotografía. También puedes seguirnos en nuestro Pinterest y acceder a contenido ya filtrado sobre aprendizaje del inglés como segunda lengua.
- Youtube: Busca contenido en inglés, ¡sabes que se puede encontrar de todo en Youtube! Por otra parte, más específicamente puedes buscar contenido de ESL y exámenes de Cambridge para practicar tu listening. También recomendamos enormemente que sigáis el canal TED o acceder a su página web, que sube constantemente discursos muy conmovedores y charlas motivadoras sobre una gran cantidad de temas.
- Sporcle.com: Navega por este sitio web y descubre los juegos más populares para retar a tus amigos o incluso a personas de otros países al azar. No tienes que seleccionar el idioma, ya que es una página web americana (también hay una aplicación para Apple y Android) creada para estimular el cerebro por medio de concursos tipo “Trivial Pursuit” y otros juegos.
- Trivia Crack: desafía a tus amigos de Facebook y otros jugadores al azar en todo el mundo con preguntas de conocimiento general. Utilizarás el inglés como una herramienta para ayudarte a responder preguntas, aprender nuevo vocabulario y reforzar estructuras de pregunta.
- Lyricstraining: Este sitio web es ideal para los amantes de la música. Navega por las diferentes canciones de varios estilos y años y completa el karaoke. Puede que alguna vez necesites usar UrbanDictionary para buscar algunas expresiones muy informales y del argot popular, ¿no es interesante?
Estoy segura que algunas de esas webs y apps ya os suenan, así que ahora espero que empecéis a usar alguno de estos recursos y saquéis provecho de ellos para practicar y preparar los exámenes futuros. ¡Os garantizo que veréis los resultados!
