Prueba ‘The Tonight’s Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ o ‘Ellen Degeneres Show’, ‘SNL (Saturday Night Live)’: realmente te divertirás mucho y practicarás más.

Things you didn’t think you could do in English

If you have joined an English course but you don’t have enough time to practise, if you have always loved English and want to get back to it before joining a proper course, or, simply, if you enjoy it and want to make it part of your daily routine, here I have some tips to include English in your normal day-to-day activities without having to make a huge effort.

            1. Set up your phone in English:

You always have it on you, why not give it an educational purpose? It is a very simple trick that can help you memorise very useful day-to-day vocabulary, as words such as ‘share’, ‘comment’, or ‘notifications’ constantly appear and so, we’re forced to learn them! It may seem a little weird or even crazy to you, but you already know how to use your mobile, don’t you? It shouldn’t be such a hassle.

            2. Use an intelligent assistant:

All our phones nowadays have a voice recognition system that activates with the magic words ‘Hey Google!’ or ‘Hey Siri!’; set them up in English and there you go! It is very funny to try and keep a conversation going with them; try giving them a compliment, asking for a joke or giving you directions, it will be funny to see how they pronounce the Spanish names of our streets.

            3. Watch lots of youtube videos in English:

  •       Tutorials: Ranging from make up tutorials, gaming tips, yoga lessons, handicrafts, music and how to play an instrument… There is a wide range of possibilities in a foreign language that will definitely help you improve.
  •       Cookery videos: if you feel like learning some fine cuisine other than our beloved ‘salmorejo’ try cookery videos. Thanks to these you will remember loads of cooking vocabulary in a real context, which will help you memorise every time you prepare some meal again.
  •       Music videos with subtitles: very usually we play music while doing some other job. In this case, I recommend you playing the songs with subtitles (every song is available on youtube) – it will really improve the experience of listening to music. Additionally, platforms like Spotify provide some interesting bits of information related to the band, artist or video you are playing. It is great to learn more about your favourite band.
  •       TV shows and series episodes: if you don’t have a Netflix or HBO account or similar, try again on Youtube and find episodes of shows you know or heard about. Try ‘The Tonight’s Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, ‘Ellen Degeneres Show’, ‘SNL (Saturday Night Live)’ you will really have some good fun and extra practise. Also, there are other shows whose format has gained popularity across the globe, such as ‘Got Talent’, ‘Dancing with the Stars’, ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar’ or ‘The Voice’,that will provide you with some extra exposition to spoken English language while entertaining: it’s a win-win!.
  •       Radio Programmes and podcasts: now also provided by Spotify, podcasts are a great tool to be tuned in and exposed to English while driving, doing the shopping, the cleaning or simply going for a walk. They’re radio programs you can download and listen to offline. Take some time to find something that you like, of course in English, I recommend you ‘The Ricky Gervais Show’, it is ironic, a bit goofy but very intelligent and funny! If you think podcasts demand too much search time in advance, check out apps like iTunes, VLC, Media Player or PotPlayer, where you may find nice radio stations to play while you’re doing something else too. Lots of real spoken English will be provided, along with music, what else can you ask for?

Once you start using some of these tools, your phone/tablet/laptop cookies will identify you as an English-lover, and your social networks will start giving you recommendations based on your recent searches, suggesting videos and sites in English automatically. It’s a three-way win: great exposition to English, quality time (not a waste) and things you really love! So, why not give it a shot?
